Birding
Birdwatching in the Rust de Winter and Elands River area is a captivating experience, offering enthusiasts a chance to explore one of South Africa's most diverse avian habitats. Located on the border of Gauteng and Limpopo, this region is home to an impressive variety of bird species, making it a prime destination for birdwatchers.
Sought after specials
The area is an owl paradise and has many sought after species.
The fences along the main road often host Southern White-faced Owl but there are two even more special species to be found. A drive to the Elands River bridge can offer up African Scops Owl in the dense riverine bush and Verreaux's Eagle-owl in the large trees.
What is more prized is River Warbler which can be heard calling in the dense bush at the Elands River bridge in mid march although they are much trickier to get to see.
The area as a whole is good for a wide array of quality bushveld birds and raptors have a strong presence in the area.
With some odd rarities, a trip to Rust de Winter dam could turn up an array of odd species.
