Blue Korhaan

Eupodotis caerulescens
  • Habitat: Grassland and Karoo.
  • Diet: Insects, small reptiles and plants.
  • Status: Uncommon resident and partly nomadic.
  • Calls: Uncommon resident and partly nomadic.
  • Similar looking: Karoo Korhaan
  • Similar sounding: Ruppells Korhaan but song has two pitch changes not three.

ID pitfalls

The blue belly and hind-neck separates from White-bellied Bustard. Although Ruppells Korhaan has some blue on the neck, its white belly also helps separate

Where to find one

Any flat, healthy grassland should give you a good chance to find Blue Korhaan. Reliable areas include Devon Grasslands, Vrede Grasslands and areas around Harrismith.
