Spotted Ground Thrush
Geokichla guttata- Habitat: Forest understory, peferring mature evergreen forest.
- Diet: Insects that it finds by flitting through forest floor leaf litter.
- Status: Partial migrant, breeding in the Eastern Cape inland in KZN, winters in the forests of coastal KZN
- Calls: A hauntingly beautiful Thrush song with a specific phrase "do-we-do-do". Also gives a very high pitched soft trill contact call.
- Similar looking: Ground Scraper Thrush but habitats differ..
- Similar sounding: Orange Ground Thrush but a shorter and simpler song phrase.
ID pitfalls
None. Spotted Ground Thrush poses few ID challenges in its habitat.
Where to find one
Dlinza Forest in winter is home to several dozen Spotted Ground Thrush.
